Snorting tic

Recommended Posts

My 15Yo sons main tic is snorting. Tonight he is snorting continuously and very hard. Last week he was diagnosed with severe dust mite allergies and yesterday started Veramist and Zyrtec. Could this be making his tic worse?

Over the weekend he started of complaining of frequent urination. No pain, burning etc. Frequent Urination syndrome has been one of his PANDAS symptoms in the past. He was diagnosed with strep on September 20, so it has been about six weeks since that. Could that be the problem?

He also broke his arm this weekend but I dont see where that could be a problem. I have never heard of body trauma causing increase in symptoms.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have some Biaxin XL and am going to start him on that and he is already taking Ibuprofen for the arm pain.

that is one of my sons current tics, it was constant, i thought i was going to the er a few weeks ago, thought he was going to pass out, have asthma attac(not asthmatic)(but, i want to say at the moment :) that's all i'm saying) and i do think that mucus, snot..whatever can create the tic....if he is panda mode, if the episode never stopped...and i would say the urination kinda confirms for your ds

my son is allergic to everything eviromental...so over the counter doesnt' cut it for him

we have not had an allergy season w/o an onset

and i do think if you had a pos strep 6 weeks ago..that you can have some lag...

was your ds 100% prior?

My son's first tic (throat clearing) started around the same time as starting Zyrtec. I remembered wondering at the time if it was from the Zyrtec but the dr said definitely not. I still wonder if it contributed by drying his throat so much that it started as a legitimate physical issue but morphed into a tic.

A number of researchers (like Dr. Leckman) have found that stress can worsen PANDAS symptoms and even lead to exacerbations. I'd imagine the physical and emotional stress of a broken arm would qualify. If your son had strep exposure in Sept, then maybe the stress has opened the BBB and allowed more of the "bad" auto-antibodies to reach the basal ganglia?

If so, then abx and ibuprofen do sound like a prudent precaution. Maybe Buster or one of the more scientific folks can weigh in on this?

My son's PANDAS explosion started when he took Zyrtec too. My very unscientific theory is that the Zyrtec crossed the blood brain barrier and took the PANDAS antibodies with it. Or, it could have just been a coincidence. Zyrtec alone, without auto-immune issues, can cause severe temporary behavior problems in children.

My son (12 years) started with eye tic and just this past year start stiff/snort/nose crunch. He was on Zyrtec and Veramyst at the time. I did my own experiment and took him off the meds completely for a month and it didn't change the symptoms. The nose tic went away after the allergy season this past Spring. And just this month (Fall Allergy Season) the nose tic just came back....

I believe the tics get worse with the allergies, not the meds. In fact I bumped up his spray to twice a day with saline gel spray and it has helped with his eye tics and sniffs.

Just to note, my son had horrible frequent urination when he started PANDAS. They went away after ABX. We only have the tics remaining. I think the upswing with his immune system and seasonal allergies are the problem. Florida hasn't had rain in a month and I know the pollen count is high now. Ragweed!
