Wilma Jenks
As soon as I started the azith. my girl started sleeping more soundly. At night her brain is on fire (her words.) She talks really fast...one thought after another just firing away. she gets so agitated that she runs in street in the middle of the night. Anyway, it just seemed to me that the azith. helped with brain inflammation and helped her sleep, but during the day she looks so much more agitated, like it is making her worse. Are there other things that doctors may try for brain inflammation if this one does not work?
PhillyPA
This is timely. I was recently on this forum bragging about how wonderful azith is. And it does seem to do wonders. I have seen lots of improvements. Last night he even answered the phone. However, after being on azith for three weeks, he got so aggressive and agitated. He was biting and kicking. It was with great conflict that I took him off the azith. I have no idea if I made the right decision because I could see the improvements his brain was making. However, the anxiety and aggression were making him suffer. I read on the label of azith that the side effects could be aggression and anxiety. I put him back on augmentin yesterday. If you are seeing problems with Azith or biaxin it could be herxing because these tend to kill the intracellular infections better than other antibiotics. Strep can be intracellular, but lyme and mycoplasma are two common intracellular culprits. Be sure to check for lyme and mycoplasma.
PhillyPA
Thanks Kim. I know that it kills intercellular strep which is why I struggle as to whether or not to keep him on it. We have an appointment with Dr. L. next week and I will discuss it with her. My son was tested by one of the top Lyme doctors in the country. He is clean for Lyme, other tic borne illnesses and mycoplasma.

I think the most commonly mentioned cephalosporins on this forum are Keflex and Omnicef. Keflex is a 1st generation cephalosporin, and is realated to penicillins somehow, so there could be a risk of an allergic reaction. Omnicef is a 3rd generation cephalosporin, and I was told it is really is unheard of to have a reaction to it because of a penicillin allergy. My daughter has done well with Omnicef. Make sure you are giving your daughter probiotics too.
Wilma Jenks
Thanks for all of your help. I just think there is not going to be help for this girl. All the doctors I take her too, seem to give up on us. My next appointment is with Scott Smith in Edison NJ. I hear he will stick with us and figure things out. My girl is so nice, smart and talented, but so so psychotic looking. She has been spinning in circles since birth. So sad. The walnut sized lump under her ear at 1o days old, keeps popping into my head, along with the sinus troubles they said she has on her MRI. I feel like it could be an infection, but she goes ballistic with all the meds/supplements we try. The only thing I can do right now is keep her stable so she does not hurt herself or me. If you met her, you woudld love her.

When did the aggression start to show up? Do you think it might just be PANDAS symtpoms "morphing"? We've had aggression problems from PANDAS and also from psych. drugs (too much lexapro--serotonin syndrome).
PhillyPA
The aggression started about day 23 of azith. I took him off on day 25. It could just be pandas stuff morphing. I am not sure. But my husband wrote the script for azith not his pandas doctor. I would feel more comfortable if his pandas doctor wrote the script. We see his pandas doctor next week. Hopefully she can guide us better about what to do.
