What natural antibiotics/ anit-virals worked for you?

Recommended Posts

We use olive leaf religiously. DH and I started taking it while DS was still on antibiotics, and since DS stopped abx in December, he's been taking it twice each day. We all made it through the winter unscathed with only one cold that laid DS low for a couple of days, but then he bounced right back. DS also takes NAC, which has been demonstrated to protect against influenza.

Which olive leaf brand have you found helpful?

What is NAC?

Are either of those recommended for children who are nine years old?

We use SolaRay because it has one of the highest percentages of the active ingredient (oleuropein)that I can find (18%)off the shelf (Vitamin Shoppe). I've heard that you can get a slightly higher percentage (up to something like 23%) by ordering supplements on-line, if you want to go that way.

NAC is N-acetylcysteine, an amino acid that has a host of properties, including keeping some varieties of flu in check:

NAC and the Flu

It's also potentially a biofilm buster, and its been studied for its positive impacts for folks with OCD (it helps modulate glutamate, or so they think). There are several other threads here on the forum about it if you're interested. My DS's primary behavior set is OCD-oriented, so for him, it sort of does double-duty. ;)

We've used a number of very helpful natural antibiotics and anti-virals along side traditional antibiotics with success. I couple of things that might help and fairly easy from a general perspective.

XClear Nasal Spray or O2-Zap (ozonated olive oil paste) for resistant infections in the nose.

Anti-virals: Andrographis, Engystol, Viragraphis, Olive Leaf Extract, Lomatium, A-C Bryon White, A-V Bryon White... We've mostly rotated antiviral's approximately every 12 weeks with sometimes a combo of herbs.

The herbs we used for bacterial infections are mostly specific to infections/parasite. As a general anti-bacterial some like colloidal silver.

If you are interested in going this route I would definitely reach out to a NP or an integrative Dr. that understands chronic infections/viruses and how to treat.

I posted this on another thread, but wanted to add it here so there's a more comprehensive list in one place...

andrographis, oregano, olive leaf extract, garlic - all have antibacterial or antiviral properties and research studies to support their use.

L-lysine did an amazing job when my DD had Epstein-Barr (again, research shows L-lysine is effective on EBV and herpes viruses).

Samento/cat's claw can be useful

xylitol - as a nasal spray or gum - works by preventing bacteria from adhering to soft tissue in the sinuses and throat. But if you use the nasal spray, you have to squirt and then move your head upside down, back and around so it swishes around in the nasal cavities. When my kids just squirted without the gyrations, it didn't help much.

Monolaurin - has great research - but for the life of me, I don't know how you get this into your kids  I spent $20 on the Lauricidin pearls and didn't get a single one into their bodies. Maybe if they liked coconut, I could get some coconut milk into them. IDK.

One note of caution - some herbs carry the risk of allergic reaction. 1% of people are allergic to andrographis. Guess whose DD is in that 1%...So always watch for hives, rashes, itching, breathing trouble...particularly if your child has other allergies. My DD is allergic to many abx and many weeds/pollens. She struggles with andrographis, oregano, resveratrol derived from Japanese Knotwood...so just be aware that adverse reactions are possible, just as they are with pharmaceutical abx.

We got herbal A- bart from our LLMD, for suspected bartonella. It has many natural ingredients in it that serve as antibiotics and antivirals.

It actually stopped my DD's intrusive thoughts and her "bad words". This was pretty much her only remaining symptom even after being on Augmentin and azithromycin.

We also use coconut oil for our DS; it comes in a capsule form but it's pretty large . . . about the size of the larger fish oil capsules. So it wouldn't be great for smaller kids or those who already find swallowings pills and capsules a challenge. Anyway, I order ours from Vitamin Shoppe on-line because the stores rarely have the capsules in stock (only the powdered or lose stuff, for some reason); they're made by Source Naturals.

Coconut Oil Capsules

I've also heard that smoothies made with coconut water can be very tasty, though I've not tried that yet. DS actually likes coconut to some extent, so that might be my next attempt.

Hmmm, maybe I should try cooking with coconut oil? I keep seeing it at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. http://www.thedailygreen.com/healthy-eating/eat-safe/spinach-pesticide-residue#fbIndex13

just wanted to mention that we too have tried homeopathy and it did not work.

BUT, that may be do to a mireade of other things including use of abx and wrong remedey. I am not patient enough to wait to see if something doen't work in a week and then give one more drop and wait a week, up to 2 drops wait another week..etc, as my son continued to tank. But i think a new trend may be happening with more homeopaths...that is if it is not the right rememdy, you should know w/i a day or 2 than up the dose or try a different rememdy.

Don't quote me on that,,it's just what i'm seeing on some boards.

HOmeopathy may be in our future, but not right now.

Based on some ART testing i am on naturals only. I may be seeing some things changing but it has only been a month or so...

i will update when i know for sure.
